About me
Hi, I'm Sofía Alvarez Salas a Peruvian- Spanish film critic, writer and festival juror currently based in The Netherlands Film critic, documentary filmmaker and cultural facilitator working at the intersection of cinema, memory and cultural dialogue. Selected work exploring how film and cultural narratives engage audiences and shape collective memory. My work exists at the intersection of image, memory, and critique. I believe cinema is a mirror, a wound, and sometimes, a quiet revolution. I've published film criticism in international outlets such as Cinencuentro, BRIFF, Diario de Almería, and the FIPRESCI Journal, covering major festivals including Berlinale, Cannes, BRIFF, Budapest Classic Film Marathon and Lima. I’ve also served as a juror at festivals like Lima, Al Este, Huánuco, and Bolivia Lab. My writing is driven by a deep curiosity for politically and emotionally charged cinema. I focus especially on films by and about women, and how cinema can function as a tool of resistance, healing, or revelation. I trace how stories are built through form — how light, silence, or a single gesture can fracture or hold a world together. Alongside criticism, I direct short films and documentaries. My work has screened at festivals in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. I see writing and filmmaking as two ways of asking the same questions — about time, identity, and truth. I believe film criticism is not just about what we see, but how we choose to look. This site brings together a selection of my recent work. Thanks for visiting — I hope you find something here that resonates.
